In addition to adding an additional minority opportunity district in Alabama, this will also add one in Louisiana (a case from there was held pending this decision). It will also result in least one more in GA and likely several in Texas.

And this via Steve Vladeck:

If you assume that additional majority-minority districts in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, & 1–2 other states would’ve been safe Democratic seats, then today’s #SCOTUS ruling strongly suggests that the Court’s 2022 shadow docket stays wrongly gave Republicans control of the House.

7/ You will recall that in the 2022 midterms, the Democrats lost control of the House. This was due to a lot of different factors, but many have noted the impact of gerrymandering and other democratic distortions in the outcome of the election.

SCOTUS in 2019's Rucho v. Common Cause said fed courts could not review (and adjudicate) claims of partisan gerrymandering.

And in February 2022, it allowed AL's map--the map it now agrees was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander--to go into effect.

And that's not all!

After the 2020 census Alabama drew its new Congressional map... and it seemed to many that the map was drawn for the purpose of diluting the electoral power of Black people, who comprise 27% of the state's population

Black voters, represented by the @NAACP_LDF and other groups, sued the state under Section 2, arguing that the map, as drawn, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

More from Elie Mystal re: #SCOTUS decision:

People are going a little hard on the "Roberts felt the pressure & is trying to throw people off the scent" narrative.

Roberts flipped here bc Alabama went too far. That Roberts has a "too far" line on this issue IS surprising. But he's not coming to Jesus or anything.

Maybe Oprah can send Thomas as $1200 bouquet of flowers w a card "Condolences for your failure to kill the 15th Amendment Hope Ginni isn't too mad and lets you off of the couch soon."

AnitaB.org, an organization of female and nonbinary tech workers, is moving its annual convention out of Orlando and taking its business elsewhere, citing Florida’s political climate and actions taken by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Legislature.

And another group of nurses is canceling a 2027 event because of similar concerns, according to the Orange County Convention Center.

Study (preprint) indicates shingles vaccine may cut dementia risk. If this proves true, it could indicate one more link between certain viral diseases and certain neurodegenerative diseases.

Does shingles vaccination cut dementia risk? Large study hints at a link. Analysis of nearly 300,000 people finds an association between the shingles jab and a lower rate of dementia — but questions linger.
