"Never before had a president used his constitutional clemency powers to free or forgive so many people who could be useful to his future political efforts...

review of Trump’s 238 clemency orders found that dozens of recipients... have gone on to plug his 2024 candidacy through social media & national interviews, contribute money... or disseminate his false claims of voter fraud"

@Urban_Hermit What about Ouragan, which is actually the French word for hurricane?

I’m an ex-mormon. My parents are still fully devoted mormons. One year, I sent my kids to spend a couple of weeks with my parents during the summer. My mom was involved in organizing the church youth camp that summer. She asked me permission to take my kids just for the day that they were going to go white water rafting. I said sure, sounds like fun, one day is ok. 1/

A nice trans activism thing I like to do is, whenever I see an article about a school or a library or something being trans-inclusive or supportive of trans people/issues in my country, I send them a thank you card/note in the post.

They're probably getting hate mail about it from bigots, you know? Maybe a librarian/admin person getting something like that could make a big difference, now and also further down the line.

Here's the thing about this opinion: Defendants usually lose motions to dismiss because hurdles are so high, but this decision was particularly biting.

I think it's safe to say at this point that Trump knows (or is reasonably sure) he will be convicted of these charges in D.C.

The tone of this decision is completely professional but the message is clear: Nope. Sorry. You get no special consideration as a former president, thereby torpedoing what he thinks is his strongest defense.

I don’t know, but I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t

Maybe try reading the actual bill: the intro page refers to "using a name other than the legal name of such an individual." I don't see anything about "a commonly accepted short-variation of your legal middle name," but I freely admit I haven't read the whole thing, so maybe you could take the time to read it and find a passage that supports your position?

, since this is something that people have done for ages.

\begin{sarcasm}
Oh, well if people have done it for ages, then of course no Republican would dare try to outlaw it. Just like how trans folks have used their preferred gender bathroom for as long as gendered bathrooms have existed, so obviously now no Republican could every introduce a law to ban us from the bathroom.
\end{sarcasm}

Any law restricting use of middle names would have to apply to all people, not just trans people.

Why? Every Republican law about trans people accessing endocrine health care has explicitly stated that it only applies to trans people, and that cis children can continue to get the same care. Why would you expect them to treat middle names differently?

Highly-mutated "Pirola" COVID variant is spreading more rapidly, but vaccines seem to neutralize it

Experts warned Pirola could do serious damage if it gained a foothold. Now that it's growing, what happens next?
