How's this idea.
Replace the SC with a Supreme Panel, composed of random picks from the numerous federal judges. Pick 3 every 2 years. Thus each serves 6 years on the Panel.
So Federal Judges still get lifetime appointments, but not lifetime on the Panel.
Such an arrangement would be very hard to stack or corrupt.

Elect people who know right from wrong. It’s a simple test you can apply to any political zealot on the right or the left, to any judge, school committee member, sheriff, or pastor. If we can no longer do that simple thing, if the money and the power and the media have forever changed our ability to tell what is right and to desire what is right, crawling our way back to decency will take generations.
