If people in power were at all serious about catching and stopping pedophiles and preventing the physical abuse of children we'd have dismantled the Catholic, Mormon and evangelical churches, and basically all patriarchal fundie religions, by now. Oh, and we wouldn't be allowing ICE to "lose" children or put them in cages. But we're not, we only talk about pedophilia as if it's some mysterious, amorphous thing done by strangers in the dark that can't be addressed except by taking away everyone else's right to privacy. Can we talk about Jeffrey Epstein for a minute? Or police and childcare system involvement with child sexual abuse?

This is also how we tend to try to pretend that rape is done by some stranger in a dark alleyway rather than the more usual and frequent rape of girls and women by people we know. Very little sexual crime is being committed by strangers, most of it is being committed by people the victims trusted or who had power or authority over them in some way. I'm pretty sure most Q people are just projecting their own personal experiences of being abused and surrounded by abusers, and in some cases being abusers themselves, onto the rest of us and the secular world (this doesn't mean, of course, there aren't plenty of abusers in secular contexts too, victims are often just less indoctrinated to accept abuse).

*This post brought to you by the ghost of Sinead who never stopped raising the alarm about the Catholic church's abuses.

Happy 33rd Anniversary to the Americans with Disabilities Act and a shout out to all who fight for Equality, Dignity and Independence. Lead On!

On one side, we have a PhD in epidemiology says in a peer reviewed journal that gender affirming care is overwhelmingly beneficial for the people who receive it

On the other, we have a plumber from Tennessee who says "no it's not"

@GW@newsie.social Coastal AL here. I wonder if it’s now too hot for hurricanes to form, but will extend the season as the water cools to better temps for hurricanes.

@GW@newsie.social I wonder what effect this will have on hurricane season.

At a time when there are those who seek to ban books and bury history, I'll be clear:

Darkness and denialism can hide much, but they erase nothing. We should learn everything: the good, bad, and truth of who we are.

That’s what great nations do, and we are a great nation.

There's no shortage of stupidity.

But it's not useful to think of #fascists as stupid. We underestimate them at our peril.

Here's a link to a (free!) book on right wing authoritarian followers that really helped me understand my neighbors (and why they're so dangerous).

"Every single one of the 45 beds in the burn center is full, he said, and one-third of patients are people who fell and burned themselves on the ground. There are also burn patients in the ICU, and about half of those patients are people burned after falls."

@stefano That’s why few of the “big names” and journalists from Twitter arsed to come to Mastodon. @rolle @MisterArix

@rolle Just saw people coming to Mastodon with thousands of followers from other social platforms. They sign up, make a couple of posts like 'Hey, I'm here now!' and hours later, they're surprised they don't instantly have thousands of followers again. Then they say 'no, it doesn't work' and go back to their old social media. Engagement doesn't happen overnight, especially when there are no algorithms guiding others' choices. #Mastodon #SocialMediaEngagement #Algorithms #OnlineCommunity
