@brainsmatter @theconversationau More importantly, who decides that a given word is a “swear word?” Why is “shit” a bad word, but “excrement” isn’t, even though they mean the same thing. Why do we not yell “oh fornication!” When something goes wrong?

@beammer57 This is true. I’ve also noticed the ones doing this are those with huge Twitter followings. That seems to be what they care about most of all, but their followers will find them here.

@CaptBobbers @rbreich I think we need to work harder at providing the content. There are lots of smaller instances to join (the one I’m on has like 6 people), and since they are all connected it doesn’t really matter which one you join.

@rbreich @AlliFlowers I came to say the same thing. It’s time to let go of that platform. At the very least, post directly here instead of cross-posting.

@rbreich I’ll really miss following you, but I can’t deal with your inability to separate from Twitter.

Starting to unfollow those people who can’t separate from Twitter and still linking back there in every post.

I'm curious if there is any sense of whether #mastodon has or is developing a generational identity?

Anecdotal or data-driven takes welcome, but as a start, indicate your #generation below and boost. Discussion of the assumptions behind this welcomed!

(I had to lump older generations in with boomers because evidently surveys are limited to four choices.) #generation #GenX #GenZ #millenials #Boomers

2022 is the first midterm election since 1934 — 88 years ago — when the party in power successfully defended every incumbent Senate seat.

Congress is about to move forward with an $847 BILLION annual defense bill — an even bigger budget because of inflation.

The minimum wage has stagnated at $7.25 since 2009.

Why will we increase defense spending due to inflation — but refuse to do the same for the minimum wage?

Vegetable puns don’t work? That’s not nececelery true.

This is truly enraging.

The terrorist who killed 5 people at Club Q boasted during a 2021 bomb threat about his plans to become “the next mass killer.” Knowing this full well, authorities dropped all charges anyway and still let him keep his guns. His records were then sealed to ensure he wouldn't have to face the consequences for his threats to terrorism.

Meanwhile, Tamir Rice played with a toy gun and authorities killed him in 1.7 seconds because they "feared for their lives."

Two Americas.

Today is Pearl Harbor Day in the U.S., a “day that will live in infamy” for the unprovoked attack by the Empire of Japan upon U.S. forces stationed in Hawaii. But it also marked a dark turning point for Japanese Americans, who overnight became the “enemy.” (1/4)

@hrheingold One of the most difficult points during our rapid switch to distance learning during the pandemic is that a large number of teachers are not taught the difference between F2F and online, so they just continued to do what they’d always done…which loses SO much in translation.

Dear Mastodon client developers:

Instead of listing the same “boost” in my notification timeline 23 times, please consolidate it to “XYZ and 22 others boosted” and show it as a single entry.
