Esperanza is one of my favorite plants, as its #tropical origins makes it perfect to survive our Texas triple-digit weather.

@MKSinSA …along with Vinca, lantana, good ole roses. 🙂

@Huntn00
Had a really nice lantana that this past winter proved its last leg 😕

How are your roses doing in this heat?

@MKSinSA As long as they have adequate water, which is not excessive, the roses are sturdy to the sun,heat and blooming nicely. However, generally it seems like with this kind of heat plants are liking more shade. I’ve got some succulents I have moved into mostly shade, some into the kitchen because they were burning up. Did you hear about cactus dieing in Arizona due to the intense heat? 😳

@Huntn00
That cactus story was both fascinating and frightening! Desert plants unable to handle the heat sure got my attention!

I'm pretty happy I let a bunch of volunteer trees grow around the yard back when I got the place. Has made some difference but it's still too hot!!!

@MKSinSA Trees are like a reprieve. It’s so long since we’ve gotten decent rain, I’m afraid we’ll start losing trees. I never thought as a resident of East Central Texas I’d be experiencing almost the equivalent of Arizona summer weather. But the people of Arizona, they probably never expected to be experiencing Gehenna temps. 😳

@Huntn00

I've been watering my trees once a week since ?late? June, which was when they started dropping leaves. Elms. Before this summer, I've never had to water them before late August.

DFW BTW.

@MKSinSA

@johnb48 @MKSinSA Watering once a week definitely helps. My understanding is that if leaves turn brown and drop off that’s ok. It’s when they brown and stay on the tree, it has died. 😞

@MKSinSA Last night, I bought in our Christmas Cactus which was slowly shriveling up. Most of the chicks my wife planted in a pot have perished. Being resistant to drought is not the same as heat resistant. 😢

@Huntn00
Sorry about the chicks. They're the best part of growing succulents for me.

Is the cactus bouncing back indoors?

@MKSinSA It’s only been inside for a few days, it will take some time to see. Before we put it outside back in March, it flourished sitting in the East facing kitchen window, happy as can be. 🙂

@MKSinSA Lantana are setting new buds, and the Zinna are quite happy as long as they get enough water. We are watering our flower beds 3 times a week. Some plants Ike the dahlias are struggling. 🌻

@MKSinSA I’ll clarify that while alive the lantana has not been blooming since the intense heat started. Geisha Girl shrubs are blooming. :)
