The BBC's experiment with Mastodon is pathbreaking in English-language news -- a major organization setting up its own instance. They've really thought this through. Key language:
"We're using social.bbc as the domain, so you can be sure these accounts are genuinely from the BBC. And by linking to and from the BBC’s website, we have verified our identity on Mastodon."

Yes, the Gaza Health Ministry is part of Hamas. It was originally created, it appears, for the purpose of purging Fatah loyalists from Gaza's hospital system.
Steven Beschloss asks readers what they hear when Mike Johnson tells us he has been "ordained" by God to be House Speaker — and what this portends for the future. Johnson announced in his first statements after being made Speaker that God had "ordained" him for this office.
I hear theocracy. And hubris. And self-righteous arrogance. And total lack of respect for democracy and the vibrant pluralism of American democracy.

Best of all: occupation of #Waterloo station by #BlackJewishAlliance and comrades to match yesterday in New York at Grand Central.
Please boost! UMN Duluth CS is hiring for a tenure-track position -- all areas of CS are open, but we are especially interested in folks working on the CS side of neurorobotics. We strongly value teaching *and* research (2/2 load), and, because we value diversity of all kinds and dislike implicit bias, we're using an anonymized search process. You can find our job site here:

Read on for why I think UMN Duluth CS is a great place to teach and research.
There is a challenge that we have, all Jews, with the way in which antisemites have come into the conversation and scream the loudest, mixing legitimate critiques of Israeli policy with antisemitism, disregard for Israeli lives, delegitimization, demonization, and double standards for Israel.
This "muddies the water" and makes it more challenging to determine what is and is not hate speech.
Right now, Jews are suffering. Jews in Israel are under multiple threats, with 500,000 evacuated from their homes, rockets hitting apartment buildings, and the threat of an uprising in Israel.
Hundreds of hostages are still unaccounted for.
And around the world, antisemitism is surging, on top of the 10 year rise that we've already seen.
Jews are hurting. Jews are crying. Jews are scared.
There is room for disagreement and dissent, but without acknowledging the suffering from our own community, it can feel cold, callous, and unfeeling.

This is insane.

#Ukraine is a healthy #democracy
Families of exhausted Ukrainian soldiers have been complaining for months about the need to better rotate them and give them breaks.
Zelenskyy ordered an investigation into this a few months ago, resulting in the firing of all heads of recruitment centres for corruption. Now only people who have served in the #war can apply to replace them.
Ukrainian people openly discuss this on TV, and have #freedom to protest in the main square 🇺🇦
@soc_i_ety Descartes said Religion was the glue that holds society together. Marx called it the "Opium of the Masses". The two seem to have condensed into "The Opium that glues the bigots together".
