Mastodon was created for and by geek outcasts, most of them white. As outcasts, we think we "get" racism and other isms, but as white folk we're kind of oblivious on that front. The one we do "get" is the plight of our queer friends - again, mostly white - with whom we have worked and shared much of our lives.

To create a community that is welcoming to #blackmastodon requires us to challenge our assumptions and our own bias. Haha did I mention we're white?

Believe women. Believe Black folks. Believe Jews. Believe LGBTQ+ folks. Believe anyone who tells you they’re being attacked. As the adage goes, “privilege is learning about racism instead of experiencing it.” And this is true for all forms of targeted oppression, hatred, and violence.

In civilization, if a dude was firing a high powered rifle at 11pm in a residential area, you could call cops and they’d take his ass away.

So they asked him to stop nicely and told him they had a baby in the house. And then he came and killed them.
