In the case of the 2016 election, it was also a huge dose of sexism. The number of people who "just couldn't vote for Hillary" was staggering given Trump's many, obvious, massive flaws.

Also throw in a dash of dirty NRA money and Russian troll farms to skew the narrative.

But you're right, always a HUGE dose of racism. Trump made it "acceptable" for many - and they loved him for it.

From @DeanObeidallah - Trump has already made millions off his mugshot - but the copyright belongs to the Fulton County Sheriff. The Fulton County Jail needs millions to renovate....🤔

This is the kind of antisemitic abuse that Babka folks sadly endure. For discussing whether or not Thoreau washed his own clothes, not just one, but all of our users are subject to this kind of attack, accusing us of dual loyalty, being racist, hidden agendas to groom people and a hidden agenda to destroy the Fediverse.

This is the kind of abuse that I suffer, that our moderators suffer, and that our users suffer, merely for existing openly as Jews.

"Even the clergymen who established the first Catholic seminary operated a plantation and relied on enslaved laborers. ...

Yet enslaved Black men, women, and children remain invisible in the origin story traditionally told about the emergence of Catholicism in the United States.”

Wow. It's almost like airlines are ruthless tyrants. I mean, potentially added to the no fly list for complaining about this? Where's all the freedom of expression warriors on this one? Oh wait, corporate overlords are fine, right right right...

I cannot fathom why any reputable person, news organization, or public institution would still want to be on ‘X’, if Elon Musk allows “free” speech for neo-NAZIs, but bans the ADL. #antisemitism

Why didn't Ron DeSantis meet with Biden to accept Hurricane aid?
Chris Christie's Obama handshake.
As my friend Macacawitz said,
"Christie will never live down this act of gratitude and common decency. No place for those character attributes in the MAGAt party"

Compare to Trump, who made Governor's grovel to get COVID supplies. (Remember that?)

@AlliFlowers Exactly.

For what it’s worth: I transitioned in 2001. I was still at Univeristy. I spent the majority of the next 15 years not being out. I changed that when I realised that my being more public about my past helped normalise and educate. It also helped others see that life can go on, despite what some horrendous people want you to believe.

There are days when it doesn’t feel like that, especially in today’s climate. But what kind of person (and mother) would I be if I didn’t stand proud and advocate?

@AlliFlowers the same way I’m guessing that your cancer story is part of your past? it’s something that is part of me. Life is made up of good and bad bits, like everyone else?

At the same time, by acknowledging who I am and my life story, and by being authentic to myself and my life, I hope I can help others on similar journeys, whatever their particular challenges.

His buffoonery would have flopped on the first day if journalists had done their job instead of translating for him. On the 2016 campaign trail, he'd spew random, wandering verbal vomit and they'd recraft it so it more or less matched up with standard GOP party platform statements. Comparing his actual words to what they printed was a shocking eye opener, but nobody picked up on that story.
