@AlliFlowers Exactly.

For what it’s worth: I transitioned in 2001. I was still at Univeristy. I spent the majority of the next 15 years not being out. I changed that when I realised that my being more public about my past helped normalise and educate. It also helped others see that life can go on, despite what some horrendous people want you to believe.

There are days when it doesn’t feel like that, especially in today’s climate. But what kind of person (and mother) would I be if I didn’t stand proud and advocate?

@AlliFlowers the same way I’m guessing that your cancer story is part of your past? it’s something that is part of me. Life is made up of good and bad bits, like everyone else?

At the same time, by acknowledging who I am and my life story, and by being authentic to myself and my life, I hope I can help others on similar journeys, whatever their particular challenges.

His buffoonery would have flopped on the first day if journalists had done their job instead of translating for him. On the 2016 campaign trail, he'd spew random, wandering verbal vomit and they'd recraft it so it more or less matched up with standard GOP party platform statements. Comparing his actual words to what they printed was a shocking eye opener, but nobody picked up on that story.

@phoenixashes76 I’m sorry you deleted your posts, you made some valid points, and brought up something I hadn’t considered.

@AlliFlowers

For some, like my daughter, life is just that simple. She let us know who she wasn't at 3.5 yo and who she was a few months later. We adjusted accordingly and cleared up her paperwork along the way. Now she just has a medical issue or two to take care of.

For others, like me, it's more complex and there are bits and pieces and relationships that span decades, all along my transition.

But also, there was a brief period right after Obergefell when I and so many other older adult trans people had to decide whether to blend in and disappear, or stand out, stand up, and fight.

We use "trans" to signify that there are more of us than people would otherwise realize and that as adults, we know what we are doing. Otherwise, trans kids would have to stand alone in a fight against well established, powerful adults.

If you have transitioned from one thing to another, why include the word trans? You won’t mention your “dead name,” so why point out the rest of your past. Why not concentrate on today and the future?

Whoops. There has been a brief break in our politics/social issues/activist stuff moratorium. Management apologizes for any distress caused, and to cleanse your feed here are once more cute #kittens.

As an anaesthetist I spend a good amount of time talking, in close proximity, to vulnerable patients while having young children at home coughing and unwell.
I owe it to my patients not to pass on whatever is circulating at home to them.
I've been doing it daily for 3 years and can do it as needed for the remainder of my career.

I am currently vacationing in Greece. It is quite normal for most restaurants to have a shared bathroom for men and women. There are individual stalls, and a shared washroom.

it is completely and totally possible for all people to coexist in the same bathroom.

US conservatives are living with blinders on. Many other developed countries aren't losing their shit about who is allowed to use the bathroom. Spoiler alert: everyone.

Can we get a solarpunk rival to burning man, where people congregate to permanently upgrade civic infrastructure somewhere instead? Like a convention of hippy nerds going door to door offering to install free insulation, guerilla gardening on empty lots, repairing derelict houses, running volunteer transit, hosting pop-up pay-what-you-can grocers and restaurants.. something that revels in _mattering_ instead of "leaving no trace" (but at exorbitant cost)

The quote from the movie Platoon should have been,

"Decolonize your mind, and your ass will follow."

@AlliFlowers Have you been to the EJI memorial to the victims of lynching in Montgomery, AL? It's as solemn as any Holocaust memorial. The EJI is doing god's work down there!

Terrifying. This group has infiltrated every crevice of #Florida. #Leo stooges are placed everywhere.
If you want to see his pilot program for how the entire country would look, fascist-style, look at Florida.
Teachers cower in fear of arrest. Local Health departments were co-opted by imbeciles during #Covid. Blacks never know whether voting rights will be there next election. The Guv regularly uses violent and derogatory language. He deflects our attention to Texas' borders while our own coastline shrinks and fresh water aquifers dribble away. Confused new migrants can’t drive. He literally has goons at his secret press conferences intercept the lone guy who dares show up to ask questions.

Chaos. Fear. Confusion. All tools of the #Fascist Playbook. #project2025

@barney It was only when white evangelicals opposing civil rights laws of the 1960s allied with the US Catholic bishops to form the religious right that abortion got pushed forward as a more savory moral issue than opposition to civil rights.

For white evangelicals (and the US Catholic bishops), it has always been primarily about opposing civil rights breakthroughs, and, with abortion, especially civil rights breakthroughs for women.

The degree to which teachers reject interventions that are really just good teaching methods because of the name applied to them (UDL is an example) is shameful.
