Also: there is no such thing as a free speech absolutist. Everyone believes in reasonable limits on speech. Everyone. If you believe that defamation, libel, business fraud, and/or verbal assault should be illegal, as they are, then you're not a free speech absolutist.

You just don't want to face the possibility that *your* speech is harmful to people you pretend you care about.

If I hear about "free speech" or "the 1st amendment" as if they're equal to human life one more time, I'll scream.

@marcelias Some context: Texas has 254 counties, and the law was crafted to apply *only* to Harris County. Harris is a heavily Democratic County and has about 16% of the state's population. That's more than any other two counties combined, and more than the sum of the bottom 214 counties.

Imagine a disaster is happening and journalists, officials, and experts need to get important safety info out, but the algorithm is prioritizing showing you soft drink adds and photos of celebs on yachts. This is why social apps need to be actively supporting and working with organizations who deliver news.
