Think about things before they are said

Years ago, when my son was about 4, he suddenly began expressing worries that "Indians" were going to "scalp" him and "take his hair". I couldn't figure out where he got this from, as we knew a LOT of Native Americans from a variety of nations and nobody at home had ever said that.

I thought.

After months of re-education, I finally figured it out.

It was the song "Please Mr. Custer". It was on a whacky hit tape.

It's that simple.

Russia freed WNBA star Brittney Griner on Thursday in a dramatic high-level prisoner exchange, with the U.S. releasing notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, the White House said. The swap, at a time of heightened tensions over Ukraine, achieved a top goal for President Joe Biden, but carried a heavy price — and left behind an American jailed for nearly four years in Russia.

When I hear about the coup attempt in Germany & the desire of these violent extremists to insert Prince Heinrich XIII of Reuss as the leader after a planned execution of the German chancellor, it sounds ludicrous, laughable. But that's the thing: These people are deadly serious.

Because the plots of these anti-democratic extremists often seem so ludicrous, they can succeed because the public--& too many leaders--don't take them seriously enough. This tendency is how Trump got as far as he did.

@AlliFlowers @rbreich I understand why those who have a large Twitter following feel abandoning that platform is counterproductive to the goal: keeping an info network going because there is no comparable replacement. That's why Musk and his gang of Davos plutocrats bought it: to shut Democrat and Independent party opposition down.

I still check for news while joining other sites like this to rebuild, as Musk's toxic Twitter has already reached Dante's Fifth Circle of Hell.

@CaptBobbers Remind me tomorrow (I’m going schluffy now) to post pics of my ST collection. I think you’ll be impressed.

@JenRoberts I know many excellent teachers who are not good test takers. I don’t accept that bad test taking is always a result of stress or that stress is always responded to in the same way, regardless of context 🤷🏻‍♂️

@rbreich @AlliFlowers I came to say the same thing. It’s time to let go of that platform. At the very least, post directly here instead of cross-posting.

Starting to unfollow those people who can’t separate from Twitter and still linking back there in every post.

Wait until all the right-wing activists trying to ban books from school libraries to protect children from "inappropriate" content find out about the internet

I'm curious if there is any sense of whether #mastodon has or is developing a generational identity?

Anecdotal or data-driven takes welcome, but as a start, indicate your #generation below and boost. Discussion of the assumptions behind this welcomed!

(I had to lump older generations in with boomers because evidently surveys are limited to four choices.) #generation #GenX #GenZ #millenials #Boomers

2022 is the first midterm election since 1934 — 88 years ago — when the party in power successfully defended every incumbent Senate seat.

Congress is about to move forward with an $847 BILLION annual defense bill — an even bigger budget because of inflation.

The minimum wage has stagnated at $7.25 since 2009.

Why will we increase defense spending due to inflation — but refuse to do the same for the minimum wage?

Vegetable puns don’t work? That’s not nececelery true.

This is truly enraging.

The terrorist who killed 5 people at Club Q boasted during a 2021 bomb threat about his plans to become “the next mass killer.” Knowing this full well, authorities dropped all charges anyway and still let him keep his guns. His records were then sealed to ensure he wouldn't have to face the consequences for his threats to terrorism.

Meanwhile, Tamir Rice played with a toy gun and authorities killed him in 1.7 seconds because they "feared for their lives."

Two Americas.
