Hey Mastodon! I'm Jack, a national reporter covering the intersection of religion and politics over at Religion News Service.
I'm also the author of American Prophets, a book on the influence of the contemporary Religious Left (link in bio).
If you've got tips, story ideas, or just some thoughts, send them along!
Here's a crazy story:
#Florida plans to invalidate the drivers licenses and ticket those who drive through Florida with licenses from several states, including: Vermont, Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, and Hawaii.
Though ostensibly an immigration law, what this really does is destroy consistent travel rights across the US. A clear violation of the commerce clause. And the RealID Act as well.
This is #coldcivilwar stuff.
I worked at the polls for almost every election from 2002 until 2016. And now you know why I won't do it ever again.

Also: there is no such thing as a free speech absolutist. Everyone believes in reasonable limits on speech. Everyone. If you believe that defamation, libel, business fraud, and/or verbal assault should be illegal, as they are, then you're not a free speech absolutist.
You just don't want to face the possibility that *your* speech is harmful to people you pretend you care about.
If I hear about "free speech" or "the 1st amendment" as if they're equal to human life one more time, I'll scream.
@Eamon1916 I’m so sorry. The pets who find and adopt you are the best.
From @esqueer posted on #Threads
"This is such bullsh*t. I wrote a post about how someone called me a groomer and how I called them out and I got hit with a violation. This is my 3rd violation already. Meanwhile, all of the people who have called me groomer and misgendering me have not been met with violations.
This platform is not safe for trans people."
@thepoliticalcat Get the word out to everybody in #Ohio! #OHGOP wants to shut down majority voting to offer constitutional amendments! #FrankLaRose doing all he can to get more MAGA, for his run against #SherrodBrown Vote NO Aug 8!
@dougholton @rspfau For me, I think there are three important components in student engagement with feedback:
1. Staff writing actionable and informative feedback AND feedforward
2. Students understanding how to use the feedback through self-reflection
3. A community of trust between staff and students
@HelenaPaterson and I have some ideas here on 1 & 2 (https://osotl.org/index.php/osotl/article/view/42) and I have this on 3 (https://edarxiv.org/ufmkj/)
@w7voa Well that didn’t take long, did it.
One Step Closer: DC Bar Panel Recommends Giuliani Be Disbarred
Rudy Giuliani should be disbarred for bringing “frivolous” and “destructive” cases alleging voter fraud in the 2020 election, a committee of the D.C. bar said on Friday.
But this determination is not the last stop in the multi-year saga over Giuliani’s role in filing lawsuits seeking to invalidate swathes of votes in service of Trump’s attempt to reverse his 2020 loss.
