State leaders who seek to abolish tenure are doing so exactly because they don't want academics to have free speech. They don't want the public to know what the actual science says. Thus, tenure is essential for keeping our public discussions exposed to the best science we have.

On a personal note, I know that a lot of what I write is unpopular with the State Gov't of Texas. Over the years, I've leveled a lot of (deserved IMHO) criticism in their direction about climate and energy policy.
