@barney Yes, and though the references to Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale are often said to be overdone, how can one not look at what's happening right now in places like Alabama and Texas and not think that the misogynistic theocratic dystopia she describes is not at all far from what we're seeing unfold with our own eyes in the US right now.

In the case of the 2016 election, it was also a huge dose of sexism. The number of people who "just couldn't vote for Hillary" was staggering given Trump's many, obvious, massive flaws.
Also throw in a dash of dirty NRA money and Russian troll farms to skew the narrative.
But you're right, always a HUGE dose of racism. Trump made it "acceptable" for many - and they loved him for it.
