@deborahh @AlliFlowers Another notetaking tool to keep an eye on.
I've fallen fairly far down this rabbit hole.
- DevonThink for archiving and references. Think research papers and anything else that I download or save
- Obsidian for notes I make
@mlevison @AlliFlowers a user compared a few: https://mstdn.social/@redcrew/111058914522409440
@deborahh @AlliFlowers cool
@AlliFlowers @deborahh of course, many people, many tools.
After using Evernote and then TheBrain I decided I wanted a markdown based approach and here we are
welp, that didn't last long.
#notesnook's Search is very sub par, compared to evernote. (Separate search for tags and text, only single term search!!! No AND search). They say there's advanced search coming, but I need a note taking app now, so I can cancel Evernote before renewal.
Thx for the Obsidian tip, Mark.
I'll check out the options and report back 🙂

@mlevison @AlliFlowers @TuxOnBike @SKRiley_Author ok, that's a Nope on Obsidian, though it looks ok so far. It seems too geeky. "Head over to github" is my cue to stop reading. And while I like markdown, converting 10,000 existing notes to markdown sounds risky: what will I lose? I have links, images, pdfs...
I'll leave this research til the end.
#evernote #notesnook
@deborahh At this point I may just stick with the buil in Apple Notes app. MS OneNote is good, too. @mlevison @TuxOnBike @SKRiley_Author
@AlliFlowers @mlevison @TuxOnBike @SKRiley_Author I'm avoiding MS apps (they are resource hogs) and I worry about content-theft by companies feeding AI training sets 🙁
@deborahh That seems to becoming a big problem. @mlevison @TuxOnBike @SKRiley_Author
@AlliFlowers @mlevison @TuxOnBike @SKRiley_Author I'll admit, I panicked a bit when a (deactivated) AI icon showed up on my updated evernote android app. Then their "yay, we're raising our prices and adding AI!!!" email arrived and I was done.
If you want a tour of Obsidian and an idea of what’s possible, yell. I’m happy to hang out for a while on zoom. Warning I’ve gone full bore into PKM and notemaking
Joplin as an #evernote replacement?
"Joplin's user interface is partly based on the text editor Vim"
🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️😭
We'll, let's see how it goes ...
@deborahh Joplin + Joplin Cloud is the one I recently started using. On Obsidian I had the same assumptions as you
@cedricdes #joplin search is no better than #notesnook:
▪ it does have implicit AND for multiple search terms
▪ but, like notesnook, it searches only text, not tags 🙁 so when I want everything with text "savory" in notes tagged "recipe" ... nope.
▪ and it appears to have NO way to seach for a specific tag - just a scrolling list of tags.
Yikes.
Just sent a note to #notesnook to see how far away their advanced search is.
@deborahh I see. in my case I have 6 tags in total
Why I hate "it's on Github" 😭
Joplin notes has a user-friendly website, but for Export it says - see more on the main website. Then it directs me to this mess 😡. I see no way to Search. Finally decide on Readme and get lucky.
Well, "lucky" ... take a chance to click on Import (turns out it's also about Export). It says the same thing as the original web page. 😠
Now I'd have to interact with a dev to get an answer? ... yeah, no.
@deborahh @AlliFlowers @TuxOnBike @SKRiley_Author
(Not trying to sell Obsidian)
I'm curious where github came in. I go there only when I want to report a bug on a plugin I use.

Markdown - I don't use Markdown or Obsidian for archival references. I save webpages etc to DevonThink - either as PDFs or Webarchive. Obsidian is mostly just notes i've written.
YMMV
@mlevison info on the webpage about export was minimal, said "see our main site" with link to github. Rooted around there and found thebsame non-informative info on github 🤦♀️
So I experimented instead.
@AlliFlowers @mlevison well, I already had them troubleshoot an import issue. You're welcome! 🙂
