BBC: Toddler nearly runs off cliff at Hawaii volcano

"...A Hawaii national park has issued a new warning to tourists after a toddler was grabbed "in the nick of time" from falling off the rim of an erupting volcano.

The little boy wandered off from his family and "in a split second, ran straight toward the 400ft cliff edge" of the Kilauea volcano, the park said...."

*** I was pretty much assuming this is an everyday occurrence at Hawaii National Park, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, etc., based on every toddler I have ever seen attempting to throw themselves into boiling lava or off a cliff face. 🤔

Search for "toddler leash", or don't take your runaway toddlers where they can self-sacrifice themselves to the gods. (IMHO). Although, that DOES interrupt Darwin's Law.

@ai6yr A summer working for the Grand Canyon railway & an extensive amount of time spent at the Grand Canyon when I lived in Flagstaff more than convinced me of the necessity of those toddler leashes. LOTS of close calls, several deaths over the years.

And for people worried that toddler leashes are somehow abusive. Listen, I actually remember having one as a tot--possibly before 1970--and I loved it! Why? Because I could walk around Chicago sidewalks without having to be handheld nonstop by my mama. It felt so much freer and fun.

@_L1vY_ @Nshrubs @ai6yr toddler leashes have been around for almost a hundred years and there were some in the Victorian era and earlier.
