The big distortion is that Hitler genocided the Jews.
The reality is that he committed genocide against Germans and Poles and others who also happened to be Jewish or Romany or LGBT.
Framing his victims as "the Jews" is wrong in two ways. First, it ignores the other groups he systemically eliminated. Second, it buys into the Nazi framing of identifying these people as "Jews", when that's just their background.

This is true mostly for German Jews, who were for a big part less religious. But in Poland, where the biggest share of the killed ones came from, they were indeed Jews. Even German Jewish WW1 veterans were spared in certain cases (only up to 1/2 Jewish, volunteered to go to the front, with a special permission from H himself). They were amongst the most brutal ones.
