It does matter. The life cycle of instances is shorter than the ones of known corporate SM sites. Then, you need to move. In contrast to corporate sites, though, you can keep your contacts (almost completely. ) A big plus. Smaller, open instances tend to have a shorter life (debatable.)
Any instance ever blocking Mastodon.social would block a huge part of the #fediverse. Therefore, I would argue that #InstanceBlocking is far less likely to happen.
For instance,...
@HistoPol @AlliFlowers awesome info to know - thanks a lot for the insight! I suppose

...there is a #fedi "dark net," where you will probably find a lot of people from #TruthSocial and its ilk. But you will never know about it, unless you have the complete handle, as there is a #fediblock in place against them.
Sort of like if they were in "Thunderdome," and the sane part were "beyond. " 😉
Then, if you were, say, a historian, you'd be better off having a specialized instance, as you will quickly meet a lot of like-minded colleagues in your...
@HistoPol @AlliFlowers I’m so thankful for those baked-in quarantines and safe guards. It’s been a pleasant and friendly experience so far. Actually feels like “social” media again. Thank you again.
Absolutely agree. :)
And even though not "everyone" is here, interaction is much higher than on most other SM sites and (presently) 14 million global users--well, with how many people can you interact? ;)
@HistoPol @AlliFlowers and the interactions are SO much healthier literally anywhere else that wasn’t centralized corpo controlled - I’ve been loving it and I just wish I doubled down sooner. These last few months have been a real eye opener, and it’s interactions and communities like this - with so much knowledge and eagerness to assist, it’s just been such a pleasant experience all around so far. Thank you again for elaborating on the fediverses!
You grapsed the essence. :)
You might have already seen it, but I have a post with some ideas on how to grow your contacts and improve the user experience in the #fediverse here:

Maybe, it is of help.

...local timeline.
The same holds true for anyone into posting pornographic materials. Many sites have a rather "Puritan" approach and even a pic of bare female breasts might get you suspended (think of being in #RDS's #Florida 😉). On the other hand, there are many instances that allow porn videos.
There are more things to consider, e.g. the #geolocation of the provider ("collaboration" with national law enforcement, just imagine you'd a pregnant, under-age..

There are more reasons to be selective when choosing your instance. These were just some of the main aspects from my point of view.
It is complex but worth it. 😉

@AlliFlowers it’s also important to point out that different instances have different features.
Just for example, the instance I use has practically no limit on post size and supports quoting of posts, among other additions to the standard Mastodon feature set.
@HistoPol yes, it’s a modified version where the administrators added the extra features.
Interesting, then.
I often have issues with the length of my posts, as you know... ;)
@HistoPol ok, ok, I got off my lazy butt to look up the link to the list of features 🙂
Check out the unique features part of this page:

Yeah I never had any use for Twitter because I just couldn’t put up with a website that artificially handcuffs people to limited character lengths. I want people to be typing as much as they need to get their thoughts out.
So that is one of the critical features I was looking for when finding an instance.
Impressive web page. :)
How did you prove that?
" You must be 16 years or older and a S.T.E.M. student or professional to join our server."
@AlliFlowers @HistoPol good to know! That was my initial impression but wasn’t sure if it mattered. I was just basing that assumption off of general convos I saw about people discussing importance of instances so I thought I’d ask here. Thanks!
