@therobburgessshow deciding which server to use is different from any other socmed thingo, mainly
@weezmgk @therobburgessshow indeed, I changed two times already. First I felt not welcome at Mastodon.social, since people over there started complaining about the moves-over from Twitter, at urbanists.social there were too many complaining Americans about their car-dependent society. I hope I have found my niche now at akademienl.social.
@MariaSalomons @weezmgk @therobburgessshow I’ve concluded that so long as you follow the right people, it doesn’t really matter what instance you call home.
@AlliFlowers @weezmgk @therobburgessshow I see more interesting toots at Community now.
@MariaSalomons I find having local instances to be a bit limiting, but I'm not stopped from watching the federated timelne scroll for a while, which explains why it should not all be in one big pipe. I use the TweetDeck-like Advanced Mastodon interface which always yields a few more interesting follows. I'm on a geographically oriented instance, in my case Australian. My interests are a bit broader simply because I'm a dual national. @AlliFlowers @therobburgessshow
@Squish @therobburgessshow @MariaSalomons @weezmgk I want to follow individuals, not instances. I’ve been very happy.
@Squish @weezmgk @MariaSalomons @therobburgessshow @AlliFlowers
What about Lists?
@Carl_Ingalls @Squish I never made any use of lists on Tw^$*#%, don't miss the feature @MariaSalomons @therobburgessshow @AlliFlowers
@weezmgk @Squish @MariaSalomons @therobburgessshow @AlliFlowers
I used a List on Twitter almost exclusively. It worked better than most other methods to filter out the stuff I didn't want to see.
That might be one of the reasons that my experiences on Twitter were so much more pleasant than what I hear from a lot of people who have migrated from Twitter to Mastodon.
@Carl_Ingalls @weezmgk @Squish @MariaSalomons @therobburgessshow @AlliFlowers Ditto. On Twitter lists were always chronological, and I liked not having to mentally switch topic domains between posts. So far I haven’t used lists much here, but may if my main timeline gets too busy.
@Carl_Ingalls @weezmgk @Squish @MariaSalomons @therobburgessshow @AlliFlowers me too, and quick switch between filters, I'd have news, and those who engage most. But many you don't even follow, it was the most valuable feature of twitter
@Rasta @Carl_Ingalls @weezmgk @Squish @MariaSalomons @therobburgessshow @AlliFlowers I liked lists except that my blocked/muted words and accounts would showe up there.
@AlliFlowers @Carl_Ingalls @MariaSalomons @weezmgk @therobburgessshow if I wanted to have a bees only list I could, but would be nice to have a feed of everyone discussing bees, even those that I don’t follow. I mean, it’s not critical, which is why I haven’t switched, but would be nice to have that option.
@Squish @AlliFlowers @MariaSalomons @weezmgk @therobburgessshow
The closest I can think of (to your would be nice idea) is to follow some hashtags that relate to bees and/or beekeeping.
@MariaSalomons @Carl_Ingalls @AlliFlowers @weezmgk @therobburgessshow yea, I do follow a bunch of hashtags, that will have to do for now I suppose.
@Squish @AlliFlowers @Carl_Ingalls @MariaSalomons @weezmgk @therobburgessshow
This is not mentioned that often (even though it’s pretty obvious) but you can actually have more than one account! On the same instance or a different one. Then you can use one to follow all the bee related stuff and use the other for all the rest.
I have one for general
stuff and one for my local geographic area.
Some apps let you switch between your multiple accounts.
@therobburgessshow @weezmgk @EeeeWooo @AlliFlowers @MariaSalomons @Carl_Ingalls the reason I haven’t done that is that while I discuss beekeeping with the beeks, I also have a lot of non-beekeeper followers that love to see my beehive videos, so I really don’t want to separate them with two different accounts. I would end up having to cross post that way, so one account makes more sense for me.
@weezmgk @MariaSalomons @therobburgessshow @AlliFlowers don’t get me wrong, I’m happy following individuals, but I get a lot of benefit from following the local sfba instance for local issues, weather, etc. But I would love a way to follow the local feed for beekeeping.ninja as well, just don’t want to set up a separate account to do that.
