Agree. I think the fear of abuse quote toots is based on an assumption that it will go viral like on Twitter. But there is no reason to assume that will happen without an algorithm that is pushing for "engagement".

And it's ridiculous that I couldn't quote the toot from @taylorlorenz that I am trying to draw attention to here, so please all click this link and see what she wrote. mastodon.social/@taylorlorenz/

@taylorlorenz Oh, I just discovered that if you click the link, you will be taken to the mastodon.social server, so you can't interact with the toot unless that is your server. So linking to a toot is not even a workaround for a quote.

@anderspuck @taylorlorenz The only reason I’ve used quotes is so that other people will know what I’m responding to. It’s odd to see a post that says “me too!” or “he says that a lot” with no clue as to the subject.
