There are legitimate reasons to switch #mastodon instances, but in and among those reasons seems to be a good deal of FOMO.

Follow

@Zeb_Larson I was just thinking along similar lines. Changing instances can be a real pain in the arse. You still have to search for good follows.

@AlliFlowers I’ve done it twice, now: the first time, I just signed up for any server (making a Twitter placeholder, basically), and the second time was to move off social and into zirk.

I get the fear. I used to be a historian, so should I be on historians.social? But I also write, so maybe writing.exchange? And ooh, I do freelance work in education that isn’t higher ed…

Like you say, best to just aggressively look for the people you want to follow.

@Zeb_Larson @AlliFlowers However I think being on a good server makes it a much more interesting experience. I think of my Local as being a lot of people I would have followed if I only knew they existed; my experience on zirk.us is so much richer than when I was on .online (or Twitter, for that matter) — but then I’m not here for professional reasons

@petnoodle @AlliFlowers Agreed! I like zirk because of the character of the place: I’m a weird humanities nerd (and that comes closer to capturing me than any of my individual professions, or for that matter, my hobbies; I’m a #ttrpg and game nerd too and could plausibly fit in those communities). Trying to find the perfect server though will never happen because of the reality of this place, which is fine. Find the one that sounds best.

@Zeb_Larson @AlliFlowers general all-purpose nerd is the way I think of myself, yes
