I look at the lists of books people post, and sort of hang my head.

It seems my choices are usually pretty low brow on the literary scale. I like to escape into a novel, and it doesn't have to be Great Literature to offer that.

I also go through fads or phases of reading a lot of one kind. Currently, I'm enjoying paranormal mysteries of the cozy sort. They are fun, often with snarky heroines with pets that make me laugh and smile.

I often read books with a singular focus for awhile, whether a particular genre, author or literature from some region or subcontinent.

Every summer I do that intentionally, in what I call a Deep Dive. One year it was rereading a lot of and another time some . Another year it was reading about the art and difficulties of .

Awhile back, some and about the tribulations of Sri Lanka.

This past summer: beach reads!

@lizkat You reminded me of something I did with my granddaughter when we celebrated t-day together. I showed her the fun of translating something numerous times in other languages, then back to English. since there is no such thing as a really good translation program, it really illustrates the difficulties in translation as well as providing comic relief at how awful it can be. Sort of like the AI version of the telephone game.

@lizkat I do something similar. If I like a book I'll try another by the same author, and often I'll end up reading everything that author has written.

Recently that has been Richard Powers, Ben Lerner, and Don DeLillo; three of the best authors still writing that I know of.
