@TXsharon The US EPA came out with new methane rules today.
The detailed rules are here:
https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2023-07/SAN%2010246%20Subpart%20W%20NPRM%20Premable%20and%20Rule_Admin.pdf
Notable it appears to allow super-emitter notifications from sources other than satellites:
"The method used during by the notifier to quantify the emissions (satellite detection;
remote-sensing equipment on aircraft; mobile monitoring platform; other, specify; or unknown)."
@Huntn00 it's about reporting the release of methane into the atmosphere during extraction of oil and gas. It's not a restriction on extraction.
@dsacer Thanks! Does it consider biological sources of methane due to agriculture? I guess I could read the report, if you think it would be worth my time. Or I could read a summary. 😉 Group awareness is the first step,. And it is Not helping is that I’ve become a pessimist about the prognosis for the Earth in the hands of Humanity as we seem most likely to burn it and sell it, before succumbing to our nature. 😑
@Huntn00 this is a reporting rule for industry
@dsacer Thanks for your patience, would you say this is a step in the right direction?
@dsacer As you can tell (maybe 😉) I’m pro-environment, but tend to be pessimistic, especially with Nov2024 looming. I’m glad this is happening, so did you say the rules cover agriculture too?
@dsacer I’ve heard agriculture be described as heavy industry based on its environmental impact. 🤔 Would agriculture methane emissions be covered in other regulatory areas?
@Huntn00 no, they don't cover agriculture
