I'm mindful of the fact "gaslighting" is overused, but as congressional Republicans insist that Trump wasn't responsible for Jan. 6, it's tough to think of a better word. msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/m

"Gaslighting" is not overused, it's just standard operating procedure for an entire major political party. As you say, there's nothing else to call lies that defy evidence the entire world saw.

"I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky" was a lie. If Bill Clinton had screwed her on the White House lawn in front of the press, pulled up his pants and made that statement to the nation, it would have begun to approach what the Republicans are doing today.

With the benefit of the incumbency I think so.

There is of course no way to prove a counterfactual, but even if he hadn't than that awful precedent caused by the Brooks Brothers Riot and our partisan SCOTUS wouldn't have happened at least.

@GreenFire @MaryAustinBooks @stevebenen

Maybe. I think you're reversing causality, though. Clinton was entirely correct about the vast right-wing conspiracy.

Is being right more important than preserving the dignity of the office of the presidency?
