There are around 1.5 million people living in refugee camps and shelters operated by the United Nations under the UNRWA. As Gaza is turned into a rubble heap, that number only increases. Cutting funding to the agency is tantamount to starving over one million refugees.
Some portion UNRWA funding probably does prop up Hamas, as does any money in Gaza. A dozen employees (out of 13,000) were involved in the Oct. 7 attacks. Does that justify defunding the agency caring for displaced Palestinians?
@AlliFlowers the big questions is, when is collective punishment acceptable? It is a war crime, when used as a weapon. This isn’t about UNRWA being suspected of being a terrorist organization. It is entirely about placating Netanyahu, while furthering his stated goal of driving Palestinians to “voluntarily” resettle by starving them out of Gaza.
