@ai6yr Earlier in the chapter God says to Moses "Consecrate to me every male first-born, human and beast." Unlike other animals they would have kept, donkeys are unclean and associated with Egypt (which, at this point in the story, they had fled from that very day). So you must first "redeem" the first-born male donkey by sacrificing a lamb for it; or you have to kill it.
