the joke is that being interested in history makes one more conservative.

i believe this is true.

the more i study history the more i realize that the received wisdom regarding history is wrong;

therefore and among other things, the historical rationale for caustic liberality is suspect or outright wrong;

the impulse must first be radical skepticism toward the past, and doubly so for philosophies like "historical materialism" which supposedly stem from it

from a purely theoretical point of view, it makes sense that historical studies are the antidote to bombastic liberalism, as true radicalism seeks to follow the roots and thus to discern between historical causae -- as opposed to denying everything which came before and blindly seeking to recreate false pasts
