The devices at their bedsides were lifelines, until they learned the foam inside could break down and make them sick.

Now, they’re plagued by illness, lost sleep and worry.

@ProPublica I have on of these POS CPAPs. Philips never contacted me. I found out about the issues with them from an article in WaPO.

@The_Icarian What about the business who supplied you with the CPAP? I was notified by both, and received a replacement quickly. I’d already been complaining that there was a problem for several months. @ProPublica

@AlliFlowers @ProPublica The business that supplied me with the CPAP fled town in the middle of the night apparently. After calling multiple times and not getting an answer, I drove to their office to find the door plastered with an eviction notice, multiple CAD notices and notes from UPS about not being able to deliver. My health plans essentially shrugged this off and told me there was nothing to be done.

@AlliFlowers @ProPublica Yeah, the CPAP business is a big scam. The company I'm with now -- forced on me by my health plan -- sends me a big box of replacement parts for the crappy Chinese-made machine 3Xs a year and tries to charge me $180 every time. And did I mention I had to send them a legal request NOT to send me the replacement parts? The WIFI in the machine (disabled after the first time it did this) tried to take control of my internet. And it sent my CPAP data to China.
