I don't believe the facts on which Hitchens made those claims were in contention by anybody, but to be honest, it's been a while since I read that book.
While theists are quick to use communism in bad arguments, I think Hitchens was right. Those communist countries show that you can have similar abuses/flaws without religion.

Not really, but Hitchens argued that they turned an economic theory into a kind of substitute religion, and then proceeded to reproduce many of religion's large scale abuses upon society.
