This graphic resonates strongly with me... Especially the serious need for us to move to walk/cycle/transportation. (maybe a pipe dream, but one must attempt to take the right path...)

@ai6yr Cycling is great. I do enjoy it (except for the damn cars). But there is one small problem.

Roads.

For bicycles to be useful and efficient, they need paved roads. Pavement is massively costly to lay and maintain.

I am not sure what the answer is, other than greatly reducing suburbanization. Horses, maybe.

@yoused Denser housing with mixed use (ie nearby small stores).

@yoused @ai6yr Agreed. Those of us in rural areas don't have any options other than cars. (And even if I could safely bike on the roadway, it'd take me many hours to get anywhere!)

@yoused @ai6yr True, but bicycle paths can be smaller and don't require as much maintenance because they are for lighter vehicles.
