A lot of innocent people plead guilty to crimes they didn't commit. They are charged with a serious crime, held in jail on a cash bond they can't post, and face decades in prison.
The prosecutor then makes a plea offer that will result in a felony conviction, probation, and immediate release from jail, which the innocent person then accepts to get out of the awful, overcrowded, violent jail.
The result is a life-ruining conviction that produces generational poverty and loss of opportunity.

Lenat was working on the core problem of ChatGPT and other LLMs decades before they even existed: A lack of a basic understanding of the world. He also inspired many other AGI and NLU researchers and hobbyists, including myself.

@davidaugust Unions are the primary opportunity to have some say in your professional life because of an organization the unites the workforce so it can exert the power it possesses, and actually cares about the worker as more than a cog in the big machine that makes the owners and upper management wealthy. A cog that in their view frequently, should have no expectations other than be happy the cog is rotating.

@celset2 Sounds like your father was dealing with some racist Christian asshats*. It would not have been worth it to ask “Does Jesus approve of your message?” 🔥 * Not to imply all Christians are racist, asshats. Unfortunately Christianity has been infested by Beelzebub in disguise, and not much of a disguise.

There was a long pause. I could see my father redden.

“So, we’re not welcome here?” His voice was tight.

“Legally, you have a right to be here, of course,” the speaker said. (New York state had just enacted a law prohibiting homeowners from including “restrictive covenants” in their deeds that barred sales to “Negroes or Hebrews.”) “But we don’t think you and your family will be happy here.”

“Thank you for coming by,” my father said flatly, opening the front door for them. Then he exploded: “Now get the hell out of my house!”
